Utilizing My Basics

This silk over shirt has really helped to upgrade my style on those lazy days when I just want to wear a sleeping bag...

A racerback tank dress, jeans and flats get what I hoped to be a sophisticated boost with a drapey open-back top/jacket.
This layered look has been a regular for me while the weather is still fluctuating under 80 degrees.

And, like my Pinterest boards reveal, I particularly enjoy when minimal chic styling includes a boyish charm.  It gets me every time.

These horse-hair, spiked flats have been with me a few years now.  I absolutely adore them!!  My lil monsters :)
I've worn them with some casual khakis and a chambray and also with a white Winter coat.

This deep, exquisite green Illamasquah nail color is my favorite green.  It's a chore to put on with all the layers it needs but I really should wear it more.
It's versatile and such a gorgeously unique color.

Speaking of versatile, this tank dress has been helpful on more than one occasion:  with shorts and also harems and heels.  And I also sleep in it.

All in all, a perfect example of a Tiny ensemble!  Made up of trusty pieces that can be put together in a myriad of ways,
I truly do have a closet that will always give me something great to wear. Tiny as it may be.

Something Borrowed: Enhance Your Closet!

borrowed this tailored jacket from a friend.  Borrowing and swapping clothing with friends is definitely a Tiny Closet do.

As someone who loves clothing and experimenting with styles, I definitely don't deny my desire for shiny new pieces every season but since I realized a while ago that my neediness is actually a passing fancy and not worth permanently buying new clothes every month, I like indulging in it temporarily.  By borrowing cute, stylish pieces when I can from my cute, stylish friends.  And husband :)

jacket: Mine / top: Pink (altered) / jeans: American Apparel / shoes: CMG

And this mens button up shirt was given to me by my stylish roommate.  For a year I wore it in its original full length but a couple days ago, I decided to crop it and chop off the arms for a fresh new look with my high waisted jeans.  This will be perfect for Spring and Summer so I plan to make more!

Always marinating in simplicity, I've really settled into a minimum frills look.  So every now and then I like to add a bit of influence from a friend to enhance my style.  And when I have a hard time giving it back, that's when I know I have to get one for myself.  I think of it as a shopping screener :)

Hope you're enjoying your Monday!

Let Your Closet Influence You!

A couple years ago, I wrote an article for a friend that included tips on how to reach your goals and achieve your dreams through your closet.

The guide and tips were pretty much centered around one theory that many of you have perhaps already heard or read somewhere:

"Dress like the woman you want to be."

By doing this, you're then reminded of the woman you aspire to be every time you see yourself in the mirror.
You get to see what the woman who has achieved what you want to achieve dresses like.  In yourself.

And more importantly, if clothing influences our actions (and I strongly believe it does) then if we're dressing like the women we want to be, we would then be influenced to act like the women we want to be as well, right?  So essentially we're utilizing our wardrobe to motivate and inspire us to realize our future.  I like that.

Anywaaaaaaay, I've been thinking about that theory a lot lately as I've found myself gravitating towards more of a concentrated look these days.  Envisioning this effortless, casual, chic, warm, understated glamour has been my point of focus and I've been wanting to be surrounded by it!  I guess I realized this style is kind of an ideal destiny for myself, and when I wear this look it makes me feel like it's all attainable, you know?

I have a lot of fun with my Tiny Closet and all the countless experiments I do to keep my wardrobe creative and versatile - but it's always clear when I wear something that makes me feel like the best version of myself.  It empowers me!  And I think that's my favorite thing about clothing and style: its incredible influence

A Look of Love

Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays.  Like any observing holiday - like Mother's Day or Thanksgiving - for me, it's a day to celebrate my love for my family and the amazing people in my life.

Valentine's grumps, beware!  Love is in the air!
But anyway,

this year I wanted to play with the style of "love" for a moment.

Since romantic is not a usual look I rock (I'm more of a modern minimalist) I was excited to have an excuse to put together something different, girly and fun.
Like I really needed an excuse though, right?

Whenever I play with a different style than my own,  since it's temporary I go a less expensive route of course and hit up the Garment District, fabric shops and thrift stores.  This time, I had a specific look in mind: a lovely hybrid between my minimalist ways and a whimsical, ultra romantic styling.  I designed a lounge-like swing jacket made of deep navy lace and paired it with what else?  Chic white gypsy pants.  Whipped it all together fast for a Tiny glamour shoot!

jacket: Tiny Closet Collection / bandeau: Max Mara / pants: Tiny Closet Collection / lipstick: M.A.C. Ruby Woo

Feeling nostalgic - and needing a nicer bandeau than my trusty lycra ones, I grabbed the bandeau from my Max Mara wedding dress.  I've been on a gypsy pant kick lately so I made another pair out of a gorgeous drapy material leftover from when I made this Summer dress.

I hope you all enjoy the spirit of tomorrow and if you have a special someone, it's fun to get a little sultry and glam.

Drunk In Loooooove!!!

I Don't Have Enough Gypsy Pants

I have plenty of pants.  And they're all my favorite, which is the ultimate goal in having a Tiny Closet.
And though I don't have a passion for owning a lot of things (including clothing), I definitely have a passion for

big, drapy, voluminous pants.

And when you have a passion for a certain article of clothing, you tend to have way more in your wardrobe than you need.
Because it's not about necessity, it's about adoring big pants and wanting big pants all the time!

Much like collecting art.  I guess.  Right?  I stand by my excuse.

Anyway...  These cage-like sandals that I bought off eBay have really found they're way all over my versatile ensembles.
I'm so happy for the mild Winters in L.A. that keep me cute cocktail shoes :)

I've worn them with: jeans, a mini and also a jumper.

This chiffon top has also gotten a lot of action.  Over the last several months.  One unlikely pairing I did over the Fall last year was wear it with tiny shorts.
And then, more likely, a pair of tattered jeans.

top: Santee Alley / pants: The Tiny Closet Collection / heels: eBay (Forever21) / earrings: Melrose Farmer's Market

I made these crazy pants using fabric I picked up in the Garment District.  Zany prints like this one always pull me in since they're displayed on the sidewalk outside the stores and they're priced super low.  I shamelessly plan to make many more of these gypsy gems throughout the year!

Happy Monday, y'all

A Top Not Like The Others

I've been a crafting/sewing/creating fool lately.  February has overdosed me with ideas and inspiration.  One of the many little items I've put together recently is this open-sided long sleeve tee:

It was actually a bit by accident.  During the fitting, I realized it looked kinda cool without the sides sewn up.  So I left it as is.  It's cute, yes?

tee: Tiny Closet Collection / jeans: American Apparel / wedges: Santee Alley

Instead of a bra, I went with a simple white bandeau since the sides are completely open.  I put on my high waist jeans and some wedges and was off.  A minimal outfit that is just outside of "basic".  So for the warmer weather days, this is a creative alternative to jeans and tee.

"K is for Kinky" Came to Breakfast

Over the Summer last year, Angel of one of my favorite blogs, K is for Kinky contacted me for an in-depth interview and I was absolutely thrilled to have her over for breakfast and a photo shoot.  I usually don't post interviews I've done with other bloggers but I only now realize there's really no reason not to!

I've had some incredibly warm and fun interviews with some fabulous bloggers throughout The Tiny Closet timeline so after Angel hit me up again for another mini interview on hair and the importance of mornings, I thought I'd tell y'all to go check it out and read all about it :)

The interview was split into two parts - Part I being all about the "day in the life" of me and my husband and business partner, Theo of Media Design Elements, Part II being all about my thoughts on the importance of spending my mornings with my husband, my take on hair wraps, and beauty sleep!

What's so refreshing about being interviewed by other bloggers is that I get to talk about things I usually don't get to touch on in my own blog...

So I hope you'll jump on over to the articles and enjoy getting to know me better!

Sweatshirt with Heels

Yesterday was a big day and it ended with an even bigger evening.  My hometown football team, The Seahawks won the Super Bowl for the first time in history(!!)  Needless to say, the city of Seattle was pretty pleased.  The streets were alive with dancing and cheering and my husband's voice grew hoarser by the minute from hours of yelling.

Anyway, getting into the spirit of the events to come, I found this cute, vintagey looking Seahawks sweatshirt in my roommate's closet (thank you, Chris!!).  Put it with my favorite pair of dark denim and some very old nude heel faves and voila!

I would see this a lot during Fashion Week and it always looked so natural together.  So it's a about time I finally tried heels and a sweatshirt.

I very much enjoyed this cozy/hot look and as you may have already guessed, I never wear sweatshirts.  But with heels... with heels I could start collecting them.  Funny, finding a new style is almost like learning a new language - it opens you up to a whole new way to express yourself.
And that may have sounded stupid but I feel like you really really have to love fashion to understand.
